Road Freight Germany — European Road Transport for SMEs

Road freight is the circulatory system of European trade. For SMEs moving goods across Germany and the wider EU, road transport offers unmatched flexibility, door-to-door capability, and fast transit times compared to other modes. TradeRoute EU coordinates FTL (Full Truck Load) and LTL (Less than Truck Load) road freight across all major EU corridors, managing carrier selection, CMR documentation, cross-border customs formalities, and delivery confirmation for every shipment.

FTL vs LTL — Choosing the Right Road Freight Option

FTL (Full Truck Load) means your cargo occupies an entire truck. A standard tautliner or curtainsider truck can carry approximately 33 loading metres and up to 24,000 kg payload. FTL is the right choice when your shipment fills 60% or more of a truck, when you need direct, non-stop transport with no intermediate handling, when your cargo is fragile, high-value, or time-sensitive, and when you need guaranteed departure and arrival times. FTL pricing is charged per truck regardless of exact weight or volume.

LTL (Less than Truck Load) — sometimes called groupage — means your cargo is consolidated with other shippers’ goods in a shared truck. You pay only for the space your pallets occupy. LTL is ideal for SMEs with 1–10 pallets or consignments below 5,000 kg. Transit times are slightly longer than FTL due to hub sorting, but costs per shipment are significantly lower for smaller volumes. TradeRoute EU runs regular LTL groupage services on key EU corridors.

Key Road Freight Corridors

Our road freight network covers all major European corridors from Germany:

  • Germany–Poland: One of Europe’s busiest road freight corridors. Daily FTL and LTL services connecting Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, and other German cities with Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań, Wrocław, Gdańsk, and Kraków. Transit 1–2 days. Key commodities: automotive parts, machinery, consumer goods, food products.
  • Germany–Netherlands (Holland): The Rotterdam–Hamburg corridor is a key supply chain artery. Daily services. Transit 1 day. We coordinate road-sea multimodal shipments using Rotterdam for ocean freight connections.
  • Germany–Belgium and Luxembourg: Brussels, Antwerp, and Liège connections. Transit 1 day. Antwerp port connections available for sea freight pre-carriage.
  • Germany–France: Regular services from Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Munich to Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Strasbourg. Transit 1–2 days.
  • Germany–Eastern Europe: Services to Czech Republic (Prague, Brno), Slovakia, Hungary (Budapest), Romania (Bucharest, Cluj), and Bulgaria. Transit 2–4 days depending on destination. Growing manufacturing and supply chain activity in these markets requires reliable, customs-compliant road freight.
  • Germany–Scandinavia: Services to Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Transit 1–3 days. Scandinavian routes require specific documentation for Norway (non-EU customs territory).
  • Germany–Austria and Switzerland: Austria is EU; Switzerland requires CH customs formalities. Daily services, transit 1 day to Vienna or Zürich.

CMR Documentation Explained

The CMR (Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road) consignment note is the key document for international road freight in Europe. It is the road equivalent of the Bill of Lading for sea freight. The CMR note documents the cargo details, origin and destination addresses, carrier details, and conditions of carriage. It is legally binding and required for all cross-border road freight within signatory countries. All EU member states, as well as Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, and many other European countries, are CMR signatories. TradeRoute EU prepares and manages CMR documentation for every cross-border road freight shipment.

Cross-Border Customs — NCTS and T1/T2 Documents

For road freight crossing EU external borders (e.g., from Turkey, UK, or Ukraine into Germany), or moving goods under customs suspension within the EU, transit documents are required:

  • T1 Transit: Used for non-EU goods moving under customs suspension from an EU entry point to the final customs office of destination. For example, goods arriving at the Port of Hamburg from China but destined for Poland would move under T1 transit through Germany.
  • T2 Transit: Used for EU goods moving through non-EU territory (e.g., through Switzerland or the UK).
  • NCTS (New Computerised Transit System): The EU’s electronic system for managing customs transit movements. All T1/T2 documents are now processed through NCTS. TradeRoute EU is an authorised NCTS user and manages all transit declarations for our clients.

Transit Times Across Key EU Corridors

Approximate FTL transit times from Hamburg: Amsterdam 6–8 hours; Brussels 7–9 hours; Paris 10–12 hours; Warsaw 10–14 hours; Prague 7–9 hours; Vienna 9–11 hours; Budapest 12–15 hours; Bucharest 30–36 hours; Barcelona 20–24 hours. LTL groupage adds 1–2 days to these times due to hub consolidation. Times are approximate and depend on driver hours regulations (EU Regulation 561/2006) and border crossing delays.

Groupage Services for Smaller SME Shipments

Many SMEs do not have the cargo volume to justify a full truck. TradeRoute EU’s LTL groupage service is specifically designed for this situation. We consolidate shipments from multiple clients into shared trucks running on fixed weekly schedules on all major EU corridors. This gives you the reliability of a scheduled service at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated FTL truck. Typical minimum shipment size for our groupage service is 1 pallet (approximately 800 × 1200 mm, up to 1000 kg per pallet).

Frequently Asked Questions — Road Freight

What is the maximum load for a standard European road freight truck?

A standard European tautliner or curtainsider has a loading length of 13.6 metres, 2.4 metres width, 2.7 metres internal height, and a maximum payload of 24,000 kg. Mega-trailer trucks offer 3.0 metres internal height for tall pallets. We also offer flatbed, temperature-controlled, and ADR (hazardous goods) trucks.

Do you handle temperature-controlled road freight?

Yes. We coordinate refrigerated (reefer) truck services for food, pharmaceutical, and chemical cargo requiring temperature control. Services available for standard refrigerated (+2°C to +8°C), frozen (-18°C or below), and ambient controlled (typically +15°C to +25°C) cargo.

Can you collect cargo directly from a supplier’s factory?

Yes. All our road freight services include factory-door pickup and delivery-to-door. We coordinate with your supplier for collection time and manage the entire transport chain from there.

What happens if my cargo is delayed at the border?

Cross-border delays are rare on EU internal routes since goods move freely within the single market. For shipments crossing EU external borders (e.g., from Turkey or UK), we prepare all customs and transit documents in advance to minimise border crossing time. Our team monitors shipments in real time and communicates any delays immediately.

Is road freight insured?

Carrier liability under CMR is limited to 8.33 SDR per kg of gross weight, which is often insufficient for high-value cargo. We strongly recommend taking out separate all-risk cargo insurance. TradeRoute EU can arrange comprehensive cargo insurance coverage — ask for details when requesting a quote.
